Quilt Journals A community project sponsored by Esther’s Fabrics
The amount of creativity that walks in and out of Esther’s is truly amazing. The sense of community that exists on this Island and with our customers is equally amazing.
So…one day Margret and I were working in the shop – and our paths crossed with one particularly like-minded individual that told us of a recent ‘quilt’ show she went to and the ingenuity of it. One thing led to another – and before we quite knew what happened – the idea of ‘quilt journals’ was born. And Margret said “Let’s put this out to the community” and I said “That is a great idea”!
So for the next 12 months (at least) – each month will have a new theme. Your goal is to take that theme and express it with fabric/trims in the form of a small quilt or fiber art piece. Once that is done – write a blurb that expresses why you have done what you have chosen to do – and your quilt journal ‘page’ is complete. All quilt journal entries are ‘due’ the 1st of the following month (Aprils will be due May 1st…hey, some of us need boundaries). There will be journal examples on display the first of April for March’s topic – Liberty – which we started in-shop to try it out.
There is really only one guideline. 1) Be consistent with the size you choose to work with – 81/2 x 11, 11x17, etc. You want to be able to compile everything at the end of the year into a book/journal. Then again – do what you want and make it work if that is how this project speaks to you. The possibilities are endless. It’s that simple. Here are the month by month themes so far:
We have included pictures of Liberty done by Margret Darrah and Jennifer Rhoads to get your brains pumping! Let loose – and just let the fabric talk through you! This has the potential to be a very powerful and moving project!
