Modern Abstract Quilting with David Owen Hastings: July 27: 4-7 pm and July 28: 10-4 pm

Want to make abstract quilts? David will guide you through a creative process for making your own abstract quilt. The first session is three hours of exploring composition using paper, followed by a day of taking your paper quilts and turning 2 or three into fabric quilts.

Day 1: Exploring modern abstract compositions in paper

  • Use white, grey and black paper

  • Work quickly, intuitively and spontaneously to create multiple compositions

  • Stitch the compositions with the sewing machine for immediate results

  • Incorporate curves with geometric shapes

  • Explore spare, simple compositions for a modern look

  • Think about figure and ground

  • Consider the sewing lines as a design element

  • Assess what compositions work well, and choose 2-3 to translate into fabric on Day 2

  • Explore color choices and decide on a palette for Day 2

Day 2: Make modern abstract compositions in fabric using the quilt-as-you-go technique

  • Quickly rough cut background fabric, backing and batting

  • Map out pieces for one composition

  • Rough cut paper pattern pieces

  • Translate paper pieces into fabric

  • Audition colors and textures

  • Start with two main ground pieces

  • Build composition slowly, trying out multiple fabrics, stepping back to assess the effect of each

  • Leave edges raw, and talk about further surface design options: stitching by machine or hand, painting, drawing
