This is a fun back back that is 16” wide x 18” high x 5 1⁄2” deep backpack. In the design pictured, the bottom and the flap are made using waxed cotton or what is known as classic oilcloth (not related to the plastic version). The exterior uses a canvas or home dec fabric. The interior is lined using a lighter cotton such as a quilting cotton. There are inside pockets, and a magnetic button closure. This design is best for intermediate sewists.


1⁄3 yard 54”+ wide waxed cotton

  • 1⁄2 yard 45” wide canvas fabric or 5/8 yard if making shoulder straps out of

    main fabric

  • 1⁄2 yard 45” wide lining fabric (could be quilting weight) or 5/8 yard if

    making shoulder straps out of this fabric

  • 1/8 yard of fabric for shoulder straps if not using either main fabric or lining


  • One 3⁄4” magnetic snap

  • Four 1⁄2” wide D rings

  • 1⁄2 yard 45” wide iron on fleece batting

  • 1 5⁄8” yards 1” wide nylon or cotton webbing

  • One decorative button for snap closure

  • Two 1⁄4” grommets (optional, if you don’t use grommets, you will need to sew

    two small buttonholes.)

  • 1 yard strong ribbon or seam tape to match backpack fabric or alternatively,

    1⁄2 yard of 3/8” elastic

  • Thread to match waxed cotton
